Every time I see a rainbow, especially double rainbows, the old legend always come into mind. What if there’s really a golden treasure at the end of that rainbow? Then another question popped in my head – why did we even believe that there is a pot of gold?
The Leprechaun
According to Irish mythology, there is a pot of gold at the end of the colourful strobes of light but it is hidden by a small family of fairy called “leprechaun”. There are some lucky humans who spot a leprechaun but they still fail to find the hidden treasure because of the invisibility powers of the said family.
This magical creature is believed to lurk at night around houses and cause misfortune to the families. Riding the pet animals of families is also one of their hobbies. It is often depicted as a very old man with green dress and leather apron. Gold is their favourite treasure; that’s why it’s so hard to catch this fairy even when following the trail of a rainbow. And when you did catch one, it will grant three of your wishes.
The Tale of the Leprechaun
Now that we know who hides the pot of gold, let’s figure out why he hid it.
Long ago, there was a poor old couple in Ireland who were considered to be the first to spot a leprechaun. One day, the husband went to a nearby village to look for a job. His wife was left to do some gardening for their food. But when she pulled out a carrot, a little voice echoed from below asking what she’s doing. Out jumped an old man who introduced himself as a leprechaun. The creature went in their cottage and the old lady followed him.
“I will grant you one wish”, said the magical being, and then left the woman alone to think. When her husband got back, she shared the news. They spent the whole night thinking of what to wish given that they only have one chance.
Come morning but they still haven’t decided yet. The leprechaun appeared again; ready to grant the desires of their heart. The couple first asked for money, then for gold, new house, jewelleries, new tools and finest clothes. The old man got mad for their selfishness. He told them that he will not grant their wish but he has hidden a pot of gold at the end of rainbow for them to find.
Since then the couple searched for the hidden treasure. I know you get the picture, they never find it. And up to this day, no one has ever found the glittering pot.
